Identify an article, a speech, a video, or an advertisement that you think is manipulative or deceptive and one that is civil and effective. Use these two examples to explain what you see as the difference. (You are not required to include the actual source, but you do need to describe the "text" and the elements you're analyzing.)
Activity 1 Sample:
Example 1: This commercial with Sarah McLachlan for the ASPCA is manipulative because it relies on emotional music to make the audience feel sad for the animals that are being abused. It also shows a number of pictures of sad dogs into manipulating people into giving money to the organization. While it's not necessarily a bad cause, the method of "persuasion" preys on the audience's emotions.
Example 2: Patrick Henry's speech at the Virginia Convention is an effective speech because he bases his argument entirely on facts and logic. For instance, he says "I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided; and that is the lamp of experience. I know of no way of judging of the future but by the past." In this statement he argues that the British crown has a history of oppression and will thus continue to oppress the British colonies if they do not fight back in the form the The Revolution, breaking away from British dominion and establishing a free country of their own: The United States of America. Unlike McLachlan, Henry does not rely chiefly on the emotions of his audience by making them feel sad or guilty, instead he inspires them through logic and facts.
